our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.
after the mass extinction marking the end of the cretaceous period--and the dinosaurs--mammals and birds start to take over the world. size becomes an aspect of the mammals, not only the birds, who are the descendants of the extinct reptiles who ruled the earth for millions of years.
south america has been isolated from most of the rest of the world. due to this isolation, strange creatures have evolved here. for doedicurus, a car-sized armadillo, life isn't too bad. their armor protects them from phorusrhacos, a meat-eating bird, and smilodon, a saber-toothed cat, as does their club-like tail-tip. but the world is changing, no matter how slowly, and it seems to be changing for the worse.

The weather is rather cool, and the warmth of summer is no more than a memory. The animals of the Pleistocene must prepare for the winter, when times are at their harshest.
the CLAN. A clan of Smilodon, the largest variety of saber-toothed cats, live here. Saber-toothed cats, even Smilodon, are no match for armored creatures such as Doedicurus, but they often infiltrate the land of the giant prehistoric armadillos.

the TERROR. Phorusrhacos, South American flightless terror birds as tall as a fully-grown man of average height, wreak havoc on this part of the plain, though they usually keep away from the Smilodon-infested area.

the SHRUBBERY. Marshes, bushes, and trees dominate the shrubbery. Megatherium--a type of giant sloth--and several types of saber-toothed cat prey, including Macrauchenia, live here, though the latter usually venture out onto the plain.

the TRANQUILITY. Utter calmness is not uncommon for the glyptodont, the most heavily armored mammal ever. In fact, very little disturbs them in their chosen grassy area, though alertness is usually the state they are in as they shuffle along in peace and quiet.
